This project started as a design prompt: to make a
few designs based on vintage matchboxes. I quickly decided to incorporate cities around the Netherlands; with the idea of a souvenir that could appeal to tourists. Living in Rotterdam, I encounter tourists often and having travelled myself around Europe I also like to collect souvenirs and little trinkets when I travel. I also get quite disappointed with how badly manufactured and - for the lack of a better description - tasteless most of these designs are. So I created the concepts of the matchboxes with that intent in mind, to make something with character but that would appeal for tourists (with good taste, of course)
.
The boxes are made of two parts One outer layer that’s printed out with the design I made, and inside a smaller box with the matches. On the sides, I placed a stripe of “match striker paper” - something I had no idea existed before researching it, but it is basically a sticker paper one one side and a layer of phosphorus on the top.
I had a very fun experience selling these matchboxes at the Swan Market in Dordrecht, june 2024
