“Unquiet Slumbers”, 2025
“Unquiet Slumbers” is a visual interpretation of the Brontë sisters life and work. The publication was exhibited in the Brontë Parsonage Museum, in Haworth, the former home of the Brontë family in May of 2025 as part of the “Of Mist and Moors” exhibition.
To create the zine, there was a lot of research into the Brontë sisters beforehand. Anne, Charlotte and Emily Brontë were 19th-century English novelists known for their influence in Romantic and Gothic literature. My research consisted in learning about their childhoods, early and late life, diving deep into their biographies.
I had previously in my teenage years read “Wuthering Heights”, so I had to familiarize myself with the other sister’s bestselling titles such as “Jane Eyre” and “The Tennant of Wildfell Hall”.
I was particularly interested in how they portrayed nature in their work, and how their own environment of the English moors influenced their writing.
I explored the museum site and Haworth, the small village where the sisters grew up. The charming city brought me a lot of inspiration and perspective to work further on this project. The work I developed next was a series of watercolor paintings, informed by the research and documentation of my trip to the museum.
